About Us
A Brief History, UNITED BATTERY SYSTEMS INC opened for business in September of 1969 by its founder and mentor, Howard Cyphers. It began operation as a battery specialty shop selling new and reconditioned batteries to the public and soon added commercial accounts, business car fleets and freight transportation companies. This basic concept still remains as the economic base for the company today. Early on, all branches began to service the auto-truck electrical charging systems needs by selling and installing new or rebuilt alternators, starters, new regulators and solenoids. A free six point electrical check was adopted and is still used today. In this manner, a customer is sold only what is needed by isolating and locating the problem in the charging systems line of components, battery, alternator, regulator, starter or wiring harness. Often the problem is simply a loose fan belt or a loose or dirty battery terminal. In these instances, the customer leaves with a smile because the starting problems are solved at no cost to them. UNITED BATTERY SYSTEMS INC. has found that a satisfied customer is its best source of referrals and advertising. When the problem turns out to be the battery the consumer gets an added bonus of free installation (in most cases, there are a few exceptions). This also generates referrals.
Consequently, UNITED BATTERY SYSTEMS INC. has maintained a strong customer base year after year which is reflected today by the company's continued success. Howard also pioneered the export of scrap batteries to Pacific Rim countries for reclamation. The components of a battery are one hundred percent recyclable, over seventy percent of the feed stock for the manufacture of new batteries comes from recycled battery lead. A collection system was established for scrap batteries in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Hawaii. This effort has helped keep the environment cleaner. In December of 1986 the department of transportation shut down the export of scrap batteries from the United States. This was due to improper packing, labeling and marking. At this point no one knew how to package the batteries according to D.O.T. regulations. UNITED BATTERY SYSTEMS INC. employees worked with U.S. Coast Guard officials and devised a packaging procedure that met all regulations and was acceptable to the Captain of the port; these procedures are presently being used where ever batteries are being exported by water shipment. Over the years a consistent number of sales in the category of rebuilt starters and alternators prompted Howard to add a custom rebuild operation to the main branch to service the built-in sales of the satellite branches and open up to the heavy industrial rebuild markets. This department to date has been another great success.
In 1996 Howard's twin sons Jason and Mike took over and the brothers hit the ground running, proud to be taking the helm of the family business. The boys learned fast and with Jason's natural mechanical abilities and Michael's astute attention for detail it seemed only fitting for Jason to take the duties of running the shop where all the diagnosis and problem solving is performed on customer's vehicles and Michael attacked the problems of inventory control and the day to day matters of running a successful business. One of their business decisions was to purchase the best high tech diagnostic equipment available. Since then their hard work has increased United Battery System's business by three fold.
